Cells
C is for Cells.
Most of my scientific illustrations involve viruses and cells. And viruses in cells. Viruses need cells to replicate, and so they create lovely cellular landscapes. The most famous cell image is my animal cell (below), produced over twenty years ago for a teaching poster for Biocam. This image went viral several times, and that interest prompted me to release my free art book, BRICKS OF PERCEPTION, which explains some of the history of the image and of my career in illustration. I created my first viral landscapes back in the 80s on a Quantel Paintbox. The viral landscapes echoed those paintings of dinosaurs in swamps.
